For Goodness Sakes – I almost Forgot to Write my Pre-VMworld Blog Post!

ImageMany of you out there are preparing for your annual decent to San Francisco for VMworld 2013.  I’ve been busily preparing my schedule, stuffing every available time-slot (double, even triple booking in some cases).

As customary, I will highlight a few of my “recommended” sessions as well as other events / attractions that any attendee must try to make!  Some, or all of these may be of interest to you, but you can bet I will be there and if you catch me I will be sure to buy you a beer (that is, if it is a bar situation ;^))

Highlighted Management Track Sessions:

I had the honor and pleasure to sit through a few customer dry-run sessions – and my impression was that these presenters are the best of the best – the rich content and their presentation abilities blew me away!

  • Troubleshooting at Cox with Log Insight and vC Ops. Tuesday, 11:30-12:30 VCM5034
  • Covance – Ensuring Clinical Trial Patient Safety with vC Ops. Tuesday 5:30pm VCM5577

Next – With the recent addition of vCenter Log Insight and enthusiasm coming from its launch, CTO John Herlocker hosts a “Spotlight Session” covering the world of log analytics.

  • THE SPOTLIGHT SESSION on Log Insight. Monday, 3:30-4:30

Ok, I just love working with Bernd Harzog (APM Experts & The Virtualization Practice).  His session was top ranked last year, and this year he will presenting:

  • Building the Management Stack for your SDDC. Bernd Harzog of the Virtualization Practices gives you his take (not VMware’s) on what you need to do. Monday, 5:00-6:00 VCM4869

I often get asked what VMware is doing around automation – of course vCOPS is built on an analytics platform that enables automated operations (automated thresholding, smart alerts, capacity mgmt., etc…).  But VMware also leverages the power of vCO across the entire platform, and the following is a great technical session on how to harness the power of vCO:

  • How to Build a Self-Healing Data Center with vCenter Orchestrator VCM5695-Wednesday, 8:30-9:30

Entertainment and fun:

If that wasn’t enough fun,  I will also be “manning” the VMware Management Lounge on the expo floor – don’t ask me where it is, because I have to find out for myself when I’m there, but there will be giveaways and refreshments!

Next, Be sure to make it to the other “social events e.g. the hottest ticket in town #vmunderground party, as well as my colleagues defending their title at the #vflipcup – the full schedule is outlined on the VMware community gatherings page.

Ok – I’m off to pack and spend some time with the family before I’m away for a week.

Cheers and see you there!!

VMworld 2013 – Call for Papers Ends on April 12th, Have You Thought About Submitting a Session Abstract?

Another VMworld is looming amongst us, coming in August in San Francisco and October in Barcelona. Currently call for papers is open until April 12th (that’s next Friday folks!) I’d like to extend an offer (similarly to what I did last year) to customers of VMware vCenter Operations to participate in a technical session on how vC Ops technology assisted in solving a particular challenging situation in your environment.

I’m keeping it easy this year, I am not requiring that you battle with your corporate marketing department for permission to use your company name in any promo, or reference activities – just work with me to hone your story and present alongside myself and another seasoned VMware presenter / technologist.

What I’m looking for:

1) A story that tells a compelling use case around vC Ops (I see a LOT of blogs and tweets out there, and there is some great stuff!) – could be around the use of a dashboard, super metric, adapters, feature (e.g. VIN) / function, etc…

2) A vC Ops Customer from both Americas (to present in SF) and EMEA (Barcelona)

3) Someone who is comfortable in presenting in front of a large audience

What do you get?

1) As an accepted speaker, you receive a free pass to VMworld!

2) Exposure to your peers and a platform to show-off your progress with VMware technology

3) An opportunity to attend additional (unadvertised) VMware functions (TBD)

Even though I am a VMware Employee, I am in the same boat as other session submitters – meaning that this call for papers proposal is NOT guaranteed to be on the VMworld session roster – VMworld general session slots are highly competitive, given high demand and limited number of slots… But I believe that working with a solid customer story weaved-in with a technical use-case and presented by both the VMware product / technical teams, alongside a customer, that we stand a good chance.

If you are interested, or have any questions please send me an email – please reach out to this alias and I will respond with my direct email.

I look forward to hearing from you!

Join Paul Maritz as he shares how VMware is helping customers and partners thrive in the Cloud era. And Steve Herrod will discuss and demo technology at the heart of the software defined datacenter.

Can’t make it to VMworld? Watch the live stream of Monday’s General Session on VMware NOW, which will begin at 8:40am PT.

Next – The Breakout Sessions:

Of course, part of the richness of VMworld comes in the breakout sessions.  I wanted to highlight a few sessions that I am involved (either as a speaker, or reviewer).  I am extremely proud of the content, as I know it is VMworld worthy!!

OPS-CIM1775 VMware vCenter Operations Customers Come Forward to Tell Their Story

This session is where vExpert David Davis and I participate in a panel session with Joe Filippello (Apparatus) who shares his experience with vCenter Operations Management Suite for a large pharmaceutical corporation

OPS-CIM1564 – Troubleshooting Using vCenter Operations Manager

This session will cover some of the common troubleshooting scenarios that users typically encounter when managing a VMware vSphere® environment and show what tools are available in vCenter™ operations to isolate and resolve these problems quickly, Presented by Kit Colbert and Praveen Kannan of VMware

This session will discuss the key questions that must be designed for and answered in order to effectively analyze and plan capacity in a highly virtualized environment. This session will discuss the capabilities needed to address the key challenges around capacity risk, waste and improving efficiency in a virtualized environment. It will also go into how to effectively collaborate and share this data with the right stakeholders for more efficient management. It will showcase some key strategies on how to properly plan out an infrastructure in advance, how to decide when to invest in hardware, and stay ahead of demand like in a true retail model and showback.  Presented by Sam McBride and Monica Sharma of VMware

SS1020 – Simplify and Automate: How to Manage Services Across Multiple Platforms and Clouds

Cloud, if managed properly, can transform how you deliver and operate IT services. VMware cloud management solutions are tightly integrated with and purpose built for dynamic, software-defined cloud infrastructure to deliver this transformation, increasing business agility and reducing costs. However, other platforms are a reality and flexibility and choice are both benefits of the cloud and bedrocks of VMware’s approach. In this session we will demonstrate new VMware technology that simplifies cloud operations and enables policy-based, automated provisioning and management of services across VMware -, Amazon- and Microsoft-based clouds. In this session you will learn how you can ensure the health, efficiency and compliance of software-defined cloud infrastructure and also manage other platforms, clouds and even physical environments with the cloud infrastructure suite. Come hear how VMware can help transform the chaos of traditional management into a cohesive, integrated environment across clouds. Presented by Ramin Sayar, VP / GM VMware Management BU

Next – Spend Time on the Expo Floor

Part of my schedule includes plenty of time on the Expo floor.  Be sure to stop by the VMware booth (you can’t miss it) and say hi!

Also, don’t forget to drop by and listen to the tech talks at the #vBrownBags held all throughout the conference in the Communities / Bloggers lounge.  Take look at the schedule, also note my talk on vCenter Infrastructure Navigator Wednesday the 29th at 3:45PM
